Estate of Alan C. Byers Makes Generous Gift

Mildred and Alan C. Byers have been supporters of the Hana Cultural Center since 1982. They loved visiting Hana, a place first known to Alan Byers during his employment with the US Geological Survey. Mr. Byers continued to make gifts to the Cultural Center in memory of his wife after she passed away in 1989.

The estate of Mr. Alan C. Byers provided the Center with a cash donation and 55 items of historical significance. There are 23 Hawaii photographs dating from the 1930s, 18 geological survey maps of early Maui and Oahu, several hand drawn and colored maps possibly dating back to the Hawaiian Monarchy of the 1890s. Also a 13 books from the geological surveys conducted around Hawaii in the 1920s.

Due to the fragile condition of several of these treasured items, we have requested assistance from the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts to properly accession these items to our archive. Professional Archivist Menzi Behrnd-Klodt is scheduled to review these items in February of 1997.

We are grateful to the son and daughter of Mr. Byers, David and Barbara for this generous donation of precious Hawaiian history to our museum archive.
